Summer Swimming

Throughout this summer, we've been regulars at the YMCA swimming pool on Sunday mornings (we go to church Saturday nights). It's been a great family time for us. We're often there the same time a 6 disabled men and their helpers. I think they have cerebral palsy. Boy do they sure light up (and the volume goes up) as they get in the water. It's so fun to hear and watch. These guys love being in the water.

Our son J doesn't have a lot of meat on his bones (yet) so he often gets cold when we go swimming. A trick that the devoted Mr. Garland taught him was to lay down on the concrete sidewalk to warm up. He uses this trick a lot. J has improved his water comfort a ton this summer. He now readily goes underwater, which wasn't happening until recently.

S sure has also improved in her swimming skills this summer. She's pretty much water safe, can tread water in the deep end for at least 30 seconds, and is starting to work on her strokes. I've been doing swim lessons with the kids this summer. We've never done official lessons, mostly because I'm a believer in the "just go to the pool on a regular basis and you'll pick it up" theory. Call me crazy, but it's served us well thus far.
