Our homeschool group went whale watching last week… it was quite the adventurous day! It was pouring rain that morning, so we were thankful that it didn’t rain on us during our 2 hour tour, but boy oh boy was there “chop” … huge swells and splashing waves slamming the boat as we headed to open water. Josh and I are most prone to motion sickness, so we took Dramamine before heading out, and hoooo boy did we need it. Does this resemble the opening scene to Gilligan’s Island?
In the harbor, so excited for our trip!
Holding onto the hand railing for dear life. So many folks got sick out there in the rough water. My heart broke for them.
We busted out our snow gear to keep warm. Rachel took a snooze (I’m convinced that she gains 10 pounds when she’s asleep… heavy!):
Josh, about to fall asleep due to the Dramamine, but he didn’t get sick, hooray:
After 90 (very loooong) minutes, we finally had a whale sighting! Two fin whales… the blue whale is the largest mammal… and the fin whale is second largest. So exciting!

Fin whales can be up to 70 feet long, and the dorsal fin is waaaaay back near the tail:
The wind-blown look (the kids were drenched from the waves):
I was so glad to be back on solid ground again… whew! Totally worth it though.
